What Is the Best Time of Year for Snorkeling in Bintan?
Snorkeling conditions in Bintan are generally more favourable outside the northeast monsoon period, when seas tend to be calmer and rainfall is lower.
From December through February, monsoon conditions can bring rougher seas and lower visibility around the Trikora area.

Dry Season vs. Rainy Season
Bintan does not have four distinct seasons. Instead, it alternates between a drier period and a wetter, northeast monsoon period.
- Calmer period: roughly April through November, with lighter winds and less frequent rain.
- Monsoon period: roughly December through February, with more frequent showers, stronger winds, and rougher seas.
Water Visibility
Water visibility depends on the weather and sea conditions on a given day rather than the calendar date alone.
Clownfish and other reef fish are commonly spotted around the coral near the kelong, though visibility varies with conditions, and no operator, including Bintan Travel Guide (BTG), can guarantee a fixed level of clarity on any specific day.
Wind and Wave Conditions
Wind and wave conditions tend to be milder outside the monsoon months, which makes the boat transfer to the kelong steadier.
During December through February, wind and swell can pick up, particularly over open water between the jetty and the kelong.
Snorkeling During the Monsoon Season
During the regular season, Bintan Travel Guide (BTG) can still arrange snorkeling trips when the weather and sea conditions are suitable.
If conditions are not favourable, the trip may be postponed or rescheduled, and guests are informed in advance where possible.
From December to February, which is generally considered the monsoon period, snorkeling trips are more limited due to larger waves and less predictable sea conditions.
Even when the weather appears calm on some days, conditions can change.
For this reason, BTG may not offer or arrange snorkeling trips during this period to avoid guests having to plan around an activity that may not be suitable on the day.
Morning vs. Afternoon
Morning departures tend to mean calmer water and better visibility, since conditions can shift as the day goes on.
BTG’s snorkeling tour uses a fixed pickup window of 08:30 to 09:30, which lines up with this morning advantage.
Weather and Tour Arrangements
Bintan Travel Guide (BTG) offers a snorkeling package at a kelong, with arrangements planned around each guest and support before and during the trip.
If weather or sea conditions are not suitable on the scheduled tour date, the trip may be postponed or moved to another day.
